The “TAWASHI MUSUBI” was developed as a new type of palm-fiber scrubber that eliminates exposed metal wires—which can damage cookware—and adapts to complex shapes. The development was inspired by a request from Kama-Asa Shoten in Kappabashi, Tokyo: “Could you create a tawashi that can clean specially processed pots without causing damage?”
Conventional tawashi are typically bound with metal wire, which may come into contact with surfaces during use. In response, this product adopts a structure in which two round palm-fiber scrubbers are tied together, concealing the metal components inside and achieving a fully fiber-covered surface. This allows the scrubber to be used safely from any angle. Its three-dimensional form naturally conforms to edges of pots and kettles, rims of cups, and rounded ingredients such as root vegetables, enabling it to reach areas that are otherwise difficult to clean.
The packaging is designed as a paper sleeve that can be inserted from both the top and bottom, allowing users to experience the tactile quality and texture of the palm fibers even before opening. In its visual expression as well, the texture of the tawashi is represented through overlapping fine lines, creating a sense of depth and dimensionality. The natural friction of the palm fibers prevents the product from slipping out, eliminating the need for a lid—an advantage unique to tawashi.
